I heard a piercing scream from behind me. I cover my ears as Vega pushed me to the side. Gemma pounced on him. I ran into the shadows of the cavern and watched as two vampires attacked each other. Gemma was thrown into the air and crashed into the side of the cavern wall leaving a huge hole. She stood up and shook her head. Her one arm was hanging off her shoulder. I was in shock when I heard a crunching sound as her shoulder immediately mended itself back together. She moved her arm in a circular motion. I had to cover my ears again when she let out another piercing scream as she ran back toward Vega. With a flick of his arm she was tossed back to the floor. She got up quickly and took him by his arm. She tossed him in the air and caught him in mid-air getting ready to slam his head on the floor when the fight was stopped by a bright light. The whole room started to get brighter. I shielded my eyes. I couldn’t take the light.
Lynx pushed me away and ran to the middle of the village. All of us followed. I looked over to see Minikar with his bow and arrow ready. I felt my back for my ax. I took a deep breath and with both hands took it out of the sling for the first time. Immediately, Minikar started to shoot his arrows. I followed his arrow with my eyes. I watched as it found its target right in the chest of a faun. I looked across to the middle of the village were I saw about 20 fauns that were half-human, and half-goat. They were being led by creature that were half-bulls, half-human. If I remember anything about Greek mythology they were called minotaurs and you had to cut their horns off to kill them. I started to walk backwards having second thoughts about all of this, when I crashed into Vega.
“Ready for your first real fight?”
“I guess I don’t have a choice.”
Minikar’s arrows were whistling through the air, hitting all the targets he aimed at. I turned back to the middle of the village and saw Lynx getting the witches away from the fire, when a faun started to charge for Lynx’s. I knew it was time for me to overcome my fear. I ran full force holding my ax with two hands. I could smell the burning huts and wood as I was jumping over small bushes of fire. Running through clouds of thick white smoke. I jumped in the air, clenched my ax with all my strength, and with one swing, the faun’s legs were gone. When my feet hit the ground the faun evaporated. I turned quickly around breathing extremely heavily to see Vega ripping a faun to pieces. That one evaporated as well. Hydra was in her wolf form mutilating every faun that came within a few feet of her.
From the edge of the village I heard a horrifying noise. The ground shook beneath my feet. I crouched down lower to balance myself. I looked up and couldn’t help but scream. Chasing after Tyl was a giant minotaur. She was very agile, jumping over the fires and burnt up huts. She jumped in the air and spun over him but still the minotaur was keeping up with her.
“Vega, help me,” she yelled.
The minotaur finally caught up with her and grabbed her waist. He squeezed her with all his might and threw her to the ground. I could still hear myself screaming as Timber-tall and Minikar ran to her. I wasn’t sure if I should help Tyl or help Vega. My decision was made very quickly by a pull in my heart to go after Vega. I almost caught up with Vega when I stopped.
The minotaur was face to face with him breathing out smoke from his nose with the ring going through it. His head was two times the size of a regular bull and his legs were thick and muscular. It kicked its foot in the ash and dirt and ran full speed toward Vega. I put my hands on my ax to get ready when Vega cartwheeled over the minotaur. The dreadful looking beast stopped, turned around, and went for round two. Vega jumped and landed on his back. He grabbed it by its horns as the minotaur started screaming and panting. Vega bit down on his neck and practically decapitated it. He jumped off as the minotaur came crashing to the ground. Vega was wiping his mouth, when from the dust and ash the minotaur stood back up. Vega turned around and moved just in time.
“His horns, you have to cut them off,” I yelled.
Vega took it to the ground again. I ran to the side of Vega, swung my ax around, and with one quick swipe I took off both horns and the minotaur evaporated.
Vega ran to his mother’s side. Timber-tall had her head cradled in his lap.
“Tyl, are you going to be okay?” I asked.
